The The Big Tour is a super surf package which combines all strengths that Portugal has to offer. In ten days you visit the best beaches in the best zones in the best times of the year...at the best surf camps of Portugal.
Your journey starts on Saturday night in the bubbling centre of Lisbon at the Poets Hostel. Sunday morning 8am we leave for our first stop in WCT hot spot Peniche.
The journey's concept is simple: We stay 2 nights at five different surf camps in 4 different surf zones: Peniche, Ericeira, Alentejo and the Algarve. The camps you will visit during the journey are all run by professional and passionate people who love sharing their local knowledge with you.
Day 1 and 2: Peniche: Donna Helena, 58 Surf Camp The peninsular setting
of Peniche
makes this destination a true surf central. Since 2009 Peniche
is host to the prestigious
Rip Curl WCT event, just to underline its world
class potential. Famous beaches like
Lagido, Baleal, Molho l‘Este and
Supertubos are only a few names of beaches around
this area that
give fantastic waves for all levels. Keyword for Peniche is consistency.
58 Surf/Donna Helena is your host in Peniche. 58 Surf was created
in 2001 by local
surfer Ivo Nisa. Ivo is an amazing person that has
a big passion for his family and
people around him. With surfing
as his central focal point Ivo made 58 Surf a popular
camp with
a pleasant personal approach. The comfortable homely camp
is located right
in front of the beach of Baleal, a 5 minute walk.
Day 3 and 4 Ericeira, Ericeira:
Ribeira d'Ilhas Surf Camp
Ericeira stands for consistent and challenging surf. The
area
is famous for its classic reefs, rocky headlands and river mouths.
The long
rolling rights of your beach front surf camp Ribeira
d'Ilhas are inspiring. Eirceira
has a lot on offer and is the
breeding ground of many talented Portuguese surfers.
Ribeira
da Ilhas surf camp is your host in Ericeira. Tiago Oliveira created
this
very popular place in 2004, with its main feature being the only
direct beach front
location. This surf camp pumps day and night, with
plenty of time to surf, explore
and relax in it's own spectacular Pizza Restaurant.
Day 5 and 6 Alentejo, Porto Covo:
Costa Azul Surf Camp The Alentejo can be referred
to as the sleeping Lion of Portugal.
This province is South of Lisbons Tagus (Tejo)
river. It is here where nature gives
a different angle to your surf trip. Vast cork oak
plantations,lush wineries, and
gorgeous deserted beaches. Life here has a calm
pace here and the surf is jaw dropping.
The Alentejo knows many, many reefs, A
frames and beach breaks, all of them uncrowded.
Hence our parallel with the
sleeping Lion. This area is known for its warmer waters
and off shores. Costa
Azul surf camp is your host in the Alentejo. Andre Teixeira
created this successful
surf camp in 2006. The camp is based in the village of Porto
Covo. A village that is
booming in Summer and deserted in the off season. Andre is
a veteran in the Alentejo
and will take you out to that special hidden place where
you will be surfing in privacy.
Day 7 and 8 Algarve, West coast, Aljezur: Atlantic
Riders Surf Camp Sunny year round,
warmer waters, empty beaches, West coast and South
coast options, wild nature, dirt
roads and the list goes on. This is why some call
the Algarve the California of Europe.
The Atlantic Riders surf camp is based on the
Algarve West coast in the Costa
Vicentina Natural Park in the region of Aljezur.
The park holds access to a true gem
of (hidden) breaks, reefs and beach mixed. Explore
the South Coast when swells
are to big on the West side. Helen and Rene Helder, your
hosts, operate Atlantic
Riders since 2001. Surfguide/coach Rene knows this area like
no other. Helen
at the camp creates most delicious meals and cakes to munch on when
you get
back from the beach. Add to this the peace and quiet of the wild beaches
of the
Natural Park to make this a unique destination in your Portuguese surf adventure.
Day 9 and 10 Algarve South coast, Lagos: Jah Shaka Surf Camp Lagos marks the very
edge of the European continent. This historic town has played an important part in
the story of discovery of many parts of the world. It was from the harbour that Vasco
da Gama sailed in 1499 on his historic and epic voyage of discovery. Your ten day
surf adventure ends right down South Portugal in Lagos, where you find the Jah-
