Batata sits in the bay by the old town, five minutes on foot from the shop, with the Ponta da Piedade cliffs and the harbour wall keeping it calmer than the open beaches when there is swell or wind about. Estimated from the Lagos forecast, so check with us in the shop before you paddle out.

How much does it cost to rent a SUP in Lagos?
A stand-up paddleboard rental in Lagos costs €20 for 4 hours, €35 for 8 hours or €50 for 24 hours at Jah Shaka Surf Shop. Every rental includes the board, an adjustable paddle and a certified life jacket at no extra cost. Boards are inflatable and light enough to carry to Praia da Batata, a 5 minute walk from the shop.

Keeping the board overnight or driving it somewhere? We deflate it, lend you a high pressure pump and show you how to set it up. Boards support paddlers up to 110 kg. No experience needed, but you do need to be able to swim. We check wind and swell before every rental, and if conditions are unsafe we cancel on the spot and refund you in full.
Where to go paddleboarding near Lagos
The best place to paddleboard in Lagos is Praia da Batata, a sheltered town beach 5 minutes from the shop, with the Ponta da Piedade caves a 2 km paddle south. When the coast has swell, the Ria de Alvor lagoon and the Barragem da Bravura reservoir are flat water 15 minutes away. Early morning is calmest everywhere.

The natural launch. Batata sits inside the harbour wall at the mouth of the river, so it stays flat on most days. Paddle through the rock tunnel to Estudantes and its arch, or hug the cliffs south. Morning light, warm shallow water and the shop 5 minutes away for a swap or a wetsuit.

The famous one. Follow the cliffs past Praia da Dona Ana and Praia do Camilo to the arches and caves of Ponta da Piedade. Go at sunrise or before 10am, when the sea is at its calmest and the tour boats have not started. Keep a swim-in cove for the break. Not sure about the swell? Take the guided tour instead.

Four kilometres of sand facing south, usually glassy until the afternoon northerly (the Nortada) fills in. The marina entrance and the São Roque end are the calmest corners. Perfect for a first paddle, kids on the nose of the board, or the Yoga SUP.

Ria de Alvor lagoon

The local secret when the coast has swell. A 2 by 1.5 km estuary of sandbanks and warm, waist-deep channels between Lagos and Alvor. Launch from the Lagos side near the fish farms or from Alvor beach by the Restinga. Go from mid tide to high tide and before 11am, before the kite wind arrives. Keep clear of the oyster beds.

A freshwater reservoir in the hills behind Lagos, ringed by pine and eucalyptus and closed to motor boats. It works when every beach is blown out, and the still water is where distance paddlers train. No facilities on the water, so bring drinks. This is what the 24 hour rental and the deflated board in your boot are for.

A wide, gently shelving bay 7 km west of Lagos. The eastern end under the dark Rocha Negra headland is the calmest corner, and a short paddle round it reaches quiet cliffs and rock pools. Good on days when Batata is busy.

Where can I paddleboard near Lagos with no waves?
Three flat-water options sit within 15 minutes of the shop: the Ria de Alvor lagoon (tidal sandbanks, go mid to high tide, mornings), the Barragem da Bravura freshwater reservoir (no motor boats, works on any swell) and the sheltered marina channel at Meia Praia. In town, Praia da Batata inside the harbour wall is the calmest beach launch.
Is Lagos good for beginner paddleboarders?
Yes. Lagos faces south and its town beaches, Batata and Meia Praia, are sheltered from the Atlantic swell that hits the west coast. Mornings are usually glassy. Beginners should paddle before the afternoon wind, stay inside the bay, and leave the Ponta da Piedade caves for a calm day or a guided tour.
What time of day is best for SUP in Lagos?
Early. From sunrise to about 11am the sea is at its flattest and the boat traffic has not started. In summer the northerly Nortada wind picks up most afternoons, so a 4 hour morning rental is the sweet spot. Check the live conditions card on this page before you set out.
What equipment is included with a SUP rental?
Every stand-up paddleboard rental comes with a lightweight board, an adjustable paddle and a certified safety life jacket at no extra cost.
How do I get the board to the water?
The boards are inflatable and light enough to carry. Praia da Batata is only a five-minute walk from our shop and is the recommended launch spot. From Batata you can cruise along the Lagos coastline, explore nearby caves and grottoes or simply relax in front of the main beach.
Do you check ocean and wind conditions before I go?
Yes. We assess wind and swell every time a board goes out. If conditions are unsafe we will cancel the rental on the spot and issue a full refund.
What is the rental duration, and can I extend it?
Rentals are available for 4h, 8h, or 24h. If you'd like to extend your rental, simply get in touch and we'll be happy to assist.
Can I take the board deflated in my car?
Absolutely. If you plan to travel or keep the board overnight we will deflate it, supply a high-pressure pump for inflation at your destination and show you how to set it up.
Is there a weight or skill limit?
Our inflatable SUPs comfortably support paddlers up to 110 kg. No prior experience is required, but you must be able to swim.
Do I need to make a reservation for SUP rentals?
Walk-ins are welcome, but we recommend reserving online to secure your preferred board and ensure availability, especially during peak times, allowing you to just pick up your board and hit the ocean.
